Howdy

The Oly Friends of Herons web site is being created to provide information relating to the Great Blue Herons that nest in the vicinity of the west side Olympia Food Co-op.

The purpose of this web site is not necessarily activist--that is, its purpose is not to block development. I just hope to gather information from all parties--citizens, biologists, developers, planners--for anyone interested in these birds.

City planner Laura Keehan is working with the builder. As a result of this web site, Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife biologists have contacted the builder as well. As of July 28, the young are almost ready to fly, from nests that are at the top of several big-leaf maples. There is a well-used unofficial trail to the nest sites, and I assumed it was made by residents observing the nests, however the folks who have shot video of the nests to post here have observed evidence of encampments in the vicinity.

A crossword puzzle found at one of the encampments came from a newspaper dated May.

The web-dunce still has to procure information from biologists, city planners, the developer, and the public. Stay tuned.

While I believe that Heron's do nest in Maple trees as Lucia said, and other trees, they most often nest in big Adler's? That said, as everyone now knows, recently in the Seattle-Olympia area, many Maple trees have been vandalized, illegally chopped down for the high value of the maple wood. Has this happened in the Oly patch, and has this affected the nesting habits of the Heron's State wide?
