I stand corrected

Someone named Heron commented to say that the herons were nesting in alders, not maples, and indeed, on the WA Department of Wildlife web site I found this: "most often, herons nest in big alders over 75 feet tall."

Biologists from WA DFW are going to do, I think, an official count of nests when the leaves finish dropping and maybe they can also verify tree species in which the nests are located. No development of the site took place this summer. I'm still waiting to hear back from the state biologist about how the presence of a heronry will or will not affect development.

Herons have built nests in Maple trees, people have seen them. "Herons build nests in a variety of tree species including: alder, cedar, hemlock, Douglas fir, spruce, cottonwood, and hawthorn. But most often, herons nest in big alders over 75 feet tall."

As per the Seattle Times, "All around Western Washington, from backyards to fragile stream banks, grand old big-leaf maples are being felled and dismembered to feed a black market born of an insatiable demand for the hardwood and its eye-catching whorls and ripples."

Lucia,
While I believe that Heron's do nest in Maple trees as Lucia said, and other trees, they most often nest in big Adler's? That said, as everyone now knows, recently in the Seattle-Olympia area, many Maple trees have been vandalized, illegally chopped down for the high value of the maple wood. Has this happened in the Oly patch, and has this affected the nesting habits of the Heron's State wide?

Lucia,
Today I was at the rookery and construction has begun!!! A road has been sliced through right next to one of the most northern nesting trees, to give access to the lower potion of the lot where tree felling was occurring this morning. Please drop me an email and lets talk. ardea23@gmail.com.
