The road has been laid out through the area where the rookery was. I was told that no nest trees were cut, but that the road runs right next to several.
The tally of 6 nests, plus one partially built one, was corroborated by one state biologist and one longtime viewer of the area, although my neighbors dispute this count (claiming there are more, and saying: "They're not going in far enough").
We can only hope that these herons will prove to be resilient. Now it seems like a dream, that we had a rookery once, a fascinating addition to the neighborhood.
I still need more input from the community to confirm number and location of nests.
