Important Note

I do want to say that accoriding to my notes the permit for Wells West Townhomes was taken out in 2004. I've observed herons nesting, however, only beginning in 2006, with increasing numbers of nests each year. I don't have an answer for the question of whether these herons have relocated from the lagoon under the bridge downtown (due to eagle predation?) because the heronry by the lagoon was not noted on the county-wide inventory, and remains a figment of my imagination until I get confirmation from someone.

The townhouses will be built on a slope that runs down to West Bay, and the land below them has already been developed. 2 tree tracts will be left intact, each between 4,000 and 5,000 sq ft. The urban forester has already visited the site, and he flagged trees that were worth saving. But did he take into consideration the suitability of trees for heron nesting? For that matter, what criteria do herons use to decide what tree they will nest in?

I just wanted to note that I believe they are nesting mostly in red alder, not big leaf maple.
