What it looks like now

The machinery hasn't made further incursions into the forest, as of yesterday, 1/16. It astounds me, how saddened I am by the potential loss of the rookery--I keep thinking of Emerson's meditations on the loss of his son, which is a ridiculous comparison, I know, though not having children I do not know the enormity of that kind of grief and so I am prone to outsize comparisons.

The best one can say is that the development of the area will provide a laboratory for studying the limits of disturbance that great blues will tolerate. Mid-February will bring the commencement of breeding behavior, and so we should know soon about whether the nests will be re-used.
